Plastic reduction in school lunches

A petition to WCSD

YOUR VOICE COUNTS, let Washoe County School District know that you are a constituent and respectfully request that they prioritize reducing plastic toxin exposure to children in school meals. More info at https://www.reusablereno.org/reusables-in-schools

Given the health hazards of heating food in plastic, and plastic waste in the environment, and to effectively follow WCSD’s policies on Wellness and Conservation and Sustainability, I ask that Washoe County School District implement the following solutions:

1. Replace the single-use Styrofoam trays used in the cafeteria with reusable trays that can be washed and re-used.

2. Replace the single-use plastic utensils, condiment packets and milk cartons with reusable silverware, and bulk dispensers for condiments and milk.

3. Invest in dishwashing facilities to clean and sanitize reusable foodware for the schools’ cafeterias.

4. Allow schools to choose to exempt themselves from the current overarching contract with catering company in order to work with a more local catering company that can provide freshly-cooked food in non-plastic, reusable and washable dishware.
